Samayapuram is one of the most important pilgrimage places. It is one of a few popular temples sanctified to Goddess Sakthi and she is worshipped here as Mariamman, fondly called by her devotees as “Amma”. Samayapuram Mariamman Temple is located on Tiruchirappalli-Chennai NH 45, just 20 km north of Tiruchirappalli town and, just 17 km away from the city heart of Trichy.
King Vijayaraya Chakkaravarthi is the one who built the present day Samayapuram Mariamman temple in the early 18th century. The exciting and astonishing fact is that the Goddess is built by only sand and clay.
The history and story of the Samayapuram temple are intertwined. It is also believed that Mother Mariamman undergoes a fast for the welfare of the mankind for 28 days from the last Sunday of Masi month-February-March. During these days no cooked preparation is offered as Nivedhana but only some flour, orange, grapes and tender coconut. The special features of the Samayapuram temple are that it wears a festive look throughout the year. All the abhishekams that are done for mother are intended to reduce the heat in the earth, provide coolness and protect all of us.

The Goddess believed to relieve and prevent illness & She is homogenized with “Sitala”, the deity worshipped in the North and Central India as Goddess of Fever. But at the same time, she is considered to be good, gracious and reasonable, very much concerned about justice and proper conduct. It is followed here as once the illness gets cured, people make offertory in the form of money and other forms of worship. It has become so bountiful that Samayapuram temple has enhanced itself to the second-largest revenue-generating temple one next to Palani.
