About Trichy Railway Museum:
The Rail Museum was inaugurated by SOUTHERN RAILWAY General Manager RAKESH MISRA on 18th Feb 2014. The Rail Museum Trichy was constructed on an area of over 9000 square feet with interior works, landscaping and a toy train track. The cost of the Rail Museum is about 1.35 crore. The museum is meant to be part of the erstwhile South Indian Railways 150th Sesquicentennial celebration. Due to fund constraints, the entire museum was opened for the public on 25.02.2015. The museum will showcase the rich heritage of the erstwhile South Indian Railway. It was near Trichy Central Bus Stand.
Railway Museum Building:
The foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new building for SIR’s Museum on 30.06.2011. As per the original plan, it is a two-Souvenir shop building. The construction work for the first phase (Ground Floor) was completed and was inaugurated on 18.02.2014 by GM/SR. Due to the shortage of funds, the opening of the Museum to visitors could not be undertaken immediately for want of infrastructure facilities. To show the indoor exhibits to visitors, the preliminary work for improving the infrastructure facilities was completed during January 2015 and finally commissioned on 25.02.2015. Now it is the ‘star attraction of the passers-by through the route. The Ground floor of the Museum building is 9000 sq. ft. The cost of the Museum Building is 1.35 crores.
It has both indoor and outdoor exhibits. The Indoor exhibits display various documents from British rule. It has rare photograph collections, maps, gazettes, railway manuals and books used during British rule. Outdoor exhibits include a few vintage steam locomotives and a fully functional toy train also operates on the premises.
The rail museum is ideal for educational trips from school and colleges as well as for family outings. Consider visiting the museum during holidays or weekends. The Rail Museum is open to the general public with an entry charge of INR 50 for adults and INR 10 for children and educational institutions are eligible for the entry fee reduction. It takes up to 3 hours to fully explore the museum. So, The Rail Museum is one of the good visiting spots to spend time in Trichy
